Just tell me what to do!

There is no right answer.

Throughout my life I have spent a tremendous amount of time trying to understand the right answer for any given situation or circumstance when I needed to make a decision. I have spent a lot of time trying to decipher what the right answer is in a lot of those situations and found that there is a fundamental flaw in that question. It assumes there actually is a right answer to any situation. From my experience, except when it comes to decisions with a clear moral implication, there is rarely a single right answer. For me, it has typically been a spectrum of right. Not necessarily that there is anything wrong with one decision or the other, just that each one has different outcomes that will logically result.

How do I make decisions?

I think it comes down to evaluating the current options in front of you. Take some time to look into each of them. Understand what the likely, not guaranteed, possible outcome will be. Look at the best possible scenario and the worst likely scenario. Identify what components you can control that will influence the outcome to be more favorable. Sit with that for as long as you are able and decide which of those potential outcomes you would be comfortable with. Create an action plan or task list around those aspects of things that you can control and influence. Make your decision, then take action. Don’t wait for circumstances to align. Jump in. Make it happen.

When you view life as something you need to do perfectly by avoiding failure, you live in a very small world of paralysis and limited potential. This is the minimum existence in life and really is not living at all.

Life is really a series of experiments. The only way to be successful is to learn. The only way to learn is to fail. Failure, with learning, is the gateway to success. When you view life through this filter of experiments, you have full permission to fail in some capacities. Embracing this failure or disappointment with the focus on extracting a lesson from the experience prepares you for ultimate success.

This does not mean to be reckless and just throw caution to the wind. Wisdom still requires you to be diligent in the existing responsibilities and parameters you are living within. Just embrace the risks and push yourself to experiment. Try changing your habits, try new routines, experiment with new hobbies, take on more than you think you can handle. I guarantee you will be surprised with the results. You will discover how much more capacity you have for influence than you ever realized.
